MMADD - Adult learning inspires the next generation
Realising they had shared a difficult upbringing and school education, Angelika Paetel and Louise Crabtree from Pillgwenlly, Newport, made a decision to provide opportunities for their children that they hadn’t had themselves.
Determined to improve their own skills, they completed a Family Links Nurture Parenting course and a Language and Play course, run by Newport Surestart, and have since achieved a City & Guilds Level 2 in IT, Graphic Design, and Computer Competences and an OCN Youth and Community Work award.
With a remarkable boost of confidence, the group has established Mums Making a Difference (MMAD) who provide music, art, drama and dance activities for children and young people in their community, reaching out to the most challenging and hard to reach.
Louise says: “I’ve always believed I wasn’t very clever. Now I’ve found I’m really quite intelligent and I’m more assertive and happy. I love learning and feel so much more empowered now.”
MMAD were nominated for an award by Ceri Jones. Ceri says: “Angelika and Louise have both undertaken a number of parenting programmes and I was very impressed with the way they took the new skills they had learnt to make a difference in their communities.”
