NIACE Dysgu Cymru Digital Storytelling Project 2007- 2008
In 2005 NIACE Dysgu Cymru enabled some older learners to create Digital Stories about their learning experiences. The interest in further developing her newly gained IT skills shown by one participant inspired a new project development.
Funding was received from Communities@one, a European funded digital inclusion programme for a project due to finish at the end of December 2008. Attracting older people to tell their own stories in this digital format has proved an excellent way of introducing them to digital technology. When people see other digital stories made by people such as themselves it inspires them to want to do the same. Though some may be fearful of the technology at the beginning by the end they are justifiably proud of the final product seen on the silver or the TV screen. The vast majority of the people who engaged in the first phase of the project have gone on to do some further classes or individual learning using IT.
Not only has the project successfully engaged older people in getting to grips with new technology but it has also collected together fascinating records of local history and community stories, some humorous stories to make you smile, stories that have health messages and insights into different ways of life and in three different languages .
Each story has been written, recorded and edited by its author who has also used a variety of software to scan and manipulate photographs or other images and assemble the mini movies. Each is about 2-3 minutes.
